Roberta Leigh – 1926-2014

The woman credited with starting Gerry Anderson on his path to puppetry success with The Adventures of Twizzle and Torchy the Battery boy, Roberta Leigh, has died aged 87.

Roberta was the creator of Twizzle and Torchy, and went on to produce other puppet series including Space Patrol, and Sara and Hoppity.

Besides her career as a writer and film-maker, Roberta Leigh was a trained graphologist who lent her skills to employers assessing job applicants. She also taught elocution, worked as an agony aunt on radio phone-ins and women’s magazines and had some success as an abstract painter, showing her work at leading galleries.

Her husband died in 1981, and she is survived by her son, Jeremy Lewin.
